Abstract

The article presents a historiographical review of Western biblical studies of the 80–90s of the XX century devoted to the interpretation of the concept of predestination in the Epistle to the Romans (8:29–30). On the material of the works of leading researchers (Stam K. R., Dunn J.D.G., Fitzmyer J.A., Stuhlmacher P., Wright N.T., Byrne B., Moo D.J.) the main methodological approaches to understanding predestination in the context of Apostle Paul’s theology are analyzed. Particular attention is paid to the evolution of exegetical methods, the transition from dogmatic analysis to historical contextual one, and the identification of Christological, ecclesiological, and eschatological aspects of the concept of predestination. It is shown how the integrated application of historical and critical as well as historical and philological methods has significantly enriched the understanding of this concept in its original historical and theological context. The study demonstrates a methodological shift in Western biblical studies of the period under consideration from systematic theological constructions to multidimensional analysis of the text, taking into account its literary structure and broad theological context.

Old Testament Legal System

Abstract

Holy Scripture is an inexhaustible source of wisdom for a Christian. Containing instructions not only of a moral and social nature, the text of the Bible allows us to find guidelines for modern times. To a certain extent, it is generally known that modern secular law has its source in religious law. That is why it seems useful to turn to the Old Testament judicial system, which allows us to analyze the features and specificity of the genesis of law.

Although part of the Mosaic Law is lost in the New Testament, it is a reflection of the same moral law that is more accurately interpreted in Christianity. The morality of the Mosaic Law finds its expression in ideas and concepts about moral and immoral, in commandments, in references to love and conscience. The Ten Commandments are rightfully considered to be the quintessence of the Old Testament law. But is it possible to be more precise? How, for example, are they related to other laws in the Pentateuch? Should they be regarded as laws in themselves, or are they rather a set of moral principles that could be enshrined in case law and statutory law? These issues have been intensively discussed in recent years and an attempt has been made to study the issues in detail here.

No. 1 (28). pp. 47–67. DOI: 10.56621/27825884_2025_28_47

Abstract

This article is devoted to the attempt to revive Western Orthodoxy in France in the period between the two world wars. It is worth noting that the roots of modern Western Orthodoxy in France lie in the echoes of the colossal tragedy that befell Russia in 1917 and led to the exodus of millions of Russian Orthodox people from the territory of the former Russian Empire. As a result of this process, France became one of the main centers of Russian religious thought in emigration. The special intellectual environment of Paris in the interwar years gave rise to the idea of overcoming historical and cultural differences between Christians of the East and West by turning to the origins, to the distant past of Christianity to answer the questions of our time. The article will discuss the emergence of the idea in the Brotherhood of St. Photius, how Russian emigrants tried to restore the "Gallican rite" and establish the "Orthodox Church of France", and the perception of the idea by the society and other Orthodox Churches.

The object of the study is theological and literary texts, which present a paradigm of interaction between literary and theological formats. The research uses methods of system analysis, problem-historical and comparativetypological, determined by the research topic. The theoretical and practical significance of the article is determined by the reasoned proof that the literary format makes it possible to give the main issue of theology multifaceted spiritual and cognitive shades, religious and semantic modulations. It is literature that makes it possible to pronounce the main question of theology with the involvement of unique resources that expand this issue in its depth and completeness. The author concludes that the special theological vocation of the artistic possibilities of language lies in giving spiritual and intellectual definitions vivid imagery and effective persuasiveness. In order to accomplish such a task, а theological text must be built up in accordance with a certain methodological framework in which the potentials of theology and literature are synchronized. Abstract

The article is devoted to the problem of the ideological choice of modern Russian public consciousness. Russian public consciousness, having gone through the processes of deideologization and reideologization in the post-Soviet period, found itself in a difficult situation before the dilemma of choosing between the ideologies of liberalism and Marxism. Having conducted a philosophical and theoretical analysis of the categories of "ideology", "religion" and "conservatism", the authors come to the conclusion about the inconsistency of the noted ideologies for the public consciousness of Russia. Reflection of the features of the ontological appeals of Orthodoxy and Russian religious philosophy allow the authors to assume that the ideology of love and life-creation can be formed on such an ideological basis. It could become the ideological basis for the formation of a multipolar world.

Abstract

This work, based on the materials of the archival investigative case of the Federal Security Service of Russia for the Saratov region No. 23478 in relation to Archbishop of Saratov and Petrovsk Dosifey (Protopopov) and others, examines the specifics of the enforcement of Soviet legislation on the Church in the field of family relations. The decrees of the Soviet government that introduced civil marriage and divorce in the country came into conflict with church canon law. This legal conflict, it would seem, should have been resolved within the framework of the principle of secularism of the state, as is the case in modern Russia, but in practice this led to the initiation of criminal prosecution of the arch. Dositheus for violating civil law. Thus, the problem moves into the area of understanding the principle of secularism of the state, which is also explored in the article.
