No. 3 (30). pp. 13–27. DOI: 10.56621/27825884_2025_30_13

Abstract

The phenomenon of non-traditional religiosity includes not only structured forms, but also a significant amount of practices and ideas sporadically used outside the framework of any communities. These are those practices and religious ideas that are jointly performed and conventionally shared by small groups (cults and sects) and individual users, borrowed from a certain amount of unconventional religiosity, called in 1972 by Colin Campbell the Cultic Milieu. The content of the ideas of the Cultic Milieu is currently superficially described in terms of syncretic or eclectic, but nothing more. Within the framework of this work, an attempt was made to apply one of the classical methods of cognitive linguistics in relation to the ideas of the cult environment of society, namely, the method of conceptual integration between the mental spaces of concepts from the field of non-institutionalized non-traditional religiosity. The application of this approach allows you to identify the process of genesis of a specific construct or image of the Cultic Milieu. In this case, this is one of the many variants of pseudomedicine, namely homeopathy. According to our hypothesis, the ideas and practices of the Cultic Milieu are in a state of constant transformation and are subject to analysis only in a synchronous slice. Any construct or individual image of the Cultic Milieu by definition has religious or mytho-magical characteristics. A model for connecting religious and non-religious elements in the study area has not yet been found. The purpose of this work is to develop a model for combining religious (mytho-magical) and secular (non-religious) elements in the ideas of the Cultic Milieu.

The Personalistic Mysticism of Archimandrite Sophrony (Sakharov): Sacramentological Context

V. Budyanskiy

Budyanskiy V. Personalisticheskaya mistika arkhimandrita Sofroniya (Sakharova): sakramentologicheskiy kontekst [The personalistic mysticism of archimandrite Sophrony (Sakharov): sacramentological context] // Trudy Saratovskoj Pravoslavnoj Duhovnoj Seminarii [Proceedings of the Saratov Orthodox Theological Seminary]. 2025. No. 3(30). pp. 28–53. DOI: 10.56621/27825884_2025_30_28

Abstract

The main goal of the article is to study mystical theology of Archimandrite Sophrony (Sakharov) in his sacramentological dimension. The paper explores the role of sacraments in the author's understanding of the mystical aspect of Christian life. The methodological foundations of the work presuppose the understanding of mysticism as a semantic shade of theology, defined as a special interaction between a Christian and the subject of cognition; that is, as such communion with God, whose results can be described and expressed through rational means. At the same time, the confessional nature of Orthodox mysticism suggests that dogmatic theology acts as the basis and instance of a critical analysis of spiritual experience. An assessment of the mystical theology of Archim. Sophrony (Sakharov), from these perspectives, can improve both the process of studying the theological legacy of the past century and reception of his ideas. For this study, the integration of the author's personalistic interpretation of Orthodox mysticism into the sacramental context is of particular interest, which determines the specifics of Archim. Sophrony (Sakharov)'s view of the church sacraments. Special attention is paid to understanding the sacraments of the Church as the foundation and catalyst of the Christian spiritual life, which, according to Archim. Sophrony (Sakharov), is identical to actualization of the human personality and transition to a personal way of existence.

No. 3(30). pp. 54–81. DOI: 10.56621/27825884_2025_30_54

Abstract

The article examines the activities of the Supreme Church Administration of the Russian Orthodox Church in the area of regulation of regular public worship from 1990 to 2000 in the context of historical challenges that the Church faced in this period of modern history. The special place of the Bishops' Council of the Russian Orthodox Church of 1994 in determining the general approach to the works on regulation of liturgical practice is noted. One of the first experiences of targeted correction of the Service Book in 1997 by the decision of the Holy Synod on the proposal of the Synodal Liturgical Commission is presented. The influence of the canonization of the Host of New Martyrs and Confessors of the Russian Church on the practice of performing regular public worship is highlighted. Particular attention is paid to the publication of liturgical books and calendar-liturgical publications that inform the performers of the service of the decisions of the hierarchy on liturgical matters. It was revealed that the general approach and specific decisions of the Supreme Church Authority on the regulation of liturgical practice of the last decade of the twentieth century are in the context of the liturgical heritage of the Local Council of 1917–1918.

Socio-Philosophical Analysis of a Person's Life Path: an Activity-Based Approach

No. 3(30). pp. 82–103. DOI: 10.56621/27825884_2025_30_82

Abstract

The purpose of the article is a socio-philosophical conceptualization of a person's life path within the framework of an activity-based approach. The relevance of the research is justified by the growing interest in determining the life path of an individual at the state and personal levels. In the first case, trends related to the consolidation of value and moral foundations such as "creative work" and "collectivism" are revealed; in the second case, the need for new interpretations is revealed against the background of the identification of a person's movement in the social space with his career. When analyzing the life path of a personality from the perspective of an activity approach, materials from such researchers as K. Marx, G.S. Batishchev, K.H. Momjian are used. Based on the criteria of the subject of activity, movement, and the "beginning" and "end" points, it is determined that a person's life path turns out to be a product of human activity, as a result of which he realizes his creative potential in work as a person, transforming himself and social reality into the time interval between his inclusion and exclusion from the activity process. The article highlights the features of an active personality as a subject of a person's life path, identifies two types of life paths — authentic and inauthentic, the construction of which is associated with overcoming or not overcoming alienation of a person in society, and also characterizes the time limits of a person's life path. The indicated potential of an activity-based approach to the life path of a personality in social philosophy allows us to apply the results obtained for further analysis of the processes of modern Russian society.

Interpretation of the Concept of "Virtue" in Scientific and Religious Epistemology

No. 3(30). pp. 104–125. DOI: 10.56621/27825884_2025_30_104

Abstract

M. Heidegger wrote about the need to renew the question of the essence of being, in connection with the loss by modern man of understanding the meaning of this problem, and, moreover, referring to Plato, who was at least confused by the fact that this loss affected both himself and the society of his time, the German philosopher pointed out the absence of even such critical self-awareness among the people of his time, because being for them, without any reason, is self-understandable and self-evident. A similar situation can be observed with the concept of "virtue" in the scientific worldview, which stands on the position of objective knowledge, for which the best criterion of reliability and, in fact, objectivity is the absence of everything that is connected with human experiences, which means the elimination of man from the process of cognition itself, the exclusion of the human factor in matters of epistemology. However, Christianity says that the fullness of knowledge is possible only through Christ the Savior, Who is the fullness of everything, and that it is necessary to understand sin as the true cause of the meaninglessness of all that exists, for the meaning of existence is revealed only in its formation through virtuous and church life in well-being, through which Divine Wisdom and eternity shine. This article examines the points of contact between scientific and religious worldviews within the framework of the theories of knowledge that they developed. An important turn of classical epistemology towards its non-classical aspects is traced, which are especially evident in the epistemology of virtues (virtue epistemology), or aretic epistemology, in which the turn simply from dianoetic (intellectual) virtues to the axiological basis of knowledge, laid down in the concepts of "paideia" and "ethics" by Plato, allows us to establish a connection with Christian ethics and to designate the priority in this matter of religious knowledge, and accordingly religious epistemology.

No. 3(30). pp. 126–150. DOI: 10.56621/27825884_2025_30_126

Abstract

This article, dedicated to the memory of the outstanding Russian canonist Alexey Stepanovich Pavlov, presents a biography and a brief overview of the results of the scholarly and literary activity of the scientist. The archival materials used by the author eliminate some inaccuracies common in previous biographical essays. The reader can see that the life journey of A.S. Pavlov is intertwined with the destinies of many outstanding people of the entire XIX century (primarily representatives of legal science, church science, the scientific and administrative academic environment). A brief overview of individual works is aimed at identifying the methodological features of Pavlov's scientific research. In order to avoid subjective assessments, the author of the article took into account reviews of some of Pavlov's works and used a wide range of memoir publications of XIX and early XX centuries, highlighting the outstanding merits of the scientist to science. Research techniques based on a rare combination of theological, legal and broad philological qualifications of a legal historian and church lawyer allowed Pavlov to develop his own comparative-critical-bibliographical method of research and leave behind phenomenal monographic studies of certain issues in ecclesiastical law. The combination of such research qualities can help in achieving the goal once set by Pavlov to create a system of Russian ecclesiastical law.

Abstract

Despite all the global socio-economic changes and reforms, emanating from state institutions, or revolutions, mixing classes and social strata, changing types of property and social relations, an individual, as a subject with free will and having the opportunity to choose, has always independently decided which side to take in these changes, along which road to go further in one's personal destiny. Such a decision has always been difficult and its consequences have been different. It has been especially difficult for people who have had an understanding of their presence in other people's lives, not only in a professional and economic sense, but also in a spiritual one to support and guide large masses of the population on the spiritual and moral path of life. Using the example of the fates of three priests from the villages of Aleksashkino, Morshanovka, and Maly Uzen (the modern Piterka district of the Saratov Region), this article attempts to analyze the motives of the rural clergy in the early years of the establishment of Soviet power in the territory of today's Saratov region. The research is based on previously unpublished materials from the collections of the State Archive of the Saratov Region and the archive of the Office of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation for the Saratov region.
