No. 1(32). pp. 13–34. DOI: 10.56621/27825884_2026_32_13

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to characterize the term "hymnographic exegesis of the Holy Scripture" and identify its key features. The terminological reflection defines the scientific novelty of the conducted research. The author suggests that it is necessary to distinguish between the terms "liturgical exegesis" and "hymnographic exegesis," which are often used as synonyms: "hymnographic exegesis" implies the interpretation of a particular biblical image exclusively in hymnographic works, while "liturgical exegesis" should denote the interpretation of a biblical passage in all liturgical texts. It is found that hymnographic exegesis has its own characteristic features that distinguish it from the traditional patristic exegesis (figurative nature, synthesis, ambiguity, multimedia form, creation of sacred space, etc.). The question of the use of classical hermeneutical methods of interpreting the Holy Scripture in hymnography is raised. It is shown that examples of all four classical methods of biblical interpretation can be found in Byzantine hymnography: the literal-historical and the three types of allegorical (typological, tropological, and anagogical). This leads to the conclusion that the hymnographers created their works within the framework of the Church Tradition, although their form differed from traditional patristic texts.

Abstract

The book revision of the Trebnik is perceived by many as a process during which some rites were excluded from the composition of this book. But the rite of expulsion of pests from plantings shows the reverse side of this process. There are no scientific studies on this service. There is a work by Alexander Ivanovich Almazov, which examines the history of the appearance of the exorcism prayer of the martyr Tryphon. He indicates that this prayer appears in the Moscow printing tradition in 1677, and that it was not contained in liturgical books until the above-mentioned year. As shown in this study, the exorcism prayer of the martyr Tryphon can be found in the Greek Euchologion (1602), the Stryatinsky Trebnik (1606), the Trebnik of St. Peter (Mogila) (1646). The article provides information on which rite from which Trebnik influenced the Moscow rite from the Trebnik of 1658.

Abstract

The object of the study is the Orthodox monasteries of the Tver region as destinations for pilgrimage tourism and excursion and educational religious tourism. The goal is to use the integral-score assessment method to present a model of a comprehensive study aimed at identifying the role of Orthodox monasteries in the tourism and recreational economy of the region. The main criteria for the tourist attractiveness of Orthodox monasteries are proposed, including the availability of hotel infrastructure and accommodation conditions; the presence of public catering outlets; souvenir shops; points of sale of monastery food products, excursion services; museum exhibits located near water bodies; reception and accommodation of pilgrims (workers), additional infrastructure intended for recreation. Empirical materials on the specified criteria were collected and processed using the content analysis method. Based on it, a rating table was compiled reflecting the degree of attractiveness of the monasteries of the Tver region for tourists. The Nilov-Stolobenskaya Pustyn and the Novotorzhsky Borisoglebsky Monastery are characterized by the greatest attractiveness. A very small number of monasteries (two out of twelve) are recorded, on the territory of which there is a hotel infrastructure. However, several monasteries offer food services, conduct excursions, including, to museum expositions, sell food products of monastery production, made from natural raw materials, which acts as factors of tourist attractiveness.

Abstract

This article presents a comprehensive analysis of the missionary work of the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Saratov, exploring its unique status as an architectural monument of federal significance, the city's oldest active shrine, and a center of public life. The study encompasses the cathedral's stylistic features, its preservation during the Soviet period, and its revival in the 21st century. Particular attention is paid to the significance of its main relic — the miraculous icon of the Savior Not Made by Hands — and other relics as the basis for personal prayer and mission. It is demonstrated that for many people an interest in the cathedral's architecture and museum is the first step toward becoming acquainted with church life. The article also analyzes the parish's diverse missionary activities, including spiritual education, social service, and youth work.

No. 1(32). pp. 96–121. DOI: 10.56621/27825884_2026_32_96

Abstract

In this article, the necessity of a systematic dialogue between school students and clergy is justified in the context of the growing destructive informational impact on youth. In today's society, saturated with diverse information, adolescents encounter the influence of various ideologies, which necessitates the creation of platforms for constructive communication. Successful regional practices for organizing such interactions are analyzed, which contribute to the development of critical thinking and the strengthening of moral values among students. Additionally, legislative restrictions that hinder the broad implementation of dialogue in secular educational institutions of the Russian Federation are discussed. The article also proposes forms of interaction that align with the principles of secular education and freedom of conscience, allowing for a comfortable environment to discuss issues of faith and spirituality. The research results emphasize the importance of dialogue as an effective tool for counteracting the negative influence of information and for fostering a harmonious worldview among youth.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to identify the relationship between the solution to the problem of the social ideal and the substantiation of the concept of “scientific socialism” in the philosophy of P.L.Lavrov. The article presents a philosophical analysis of P.L.Lavrov’s ideas about the problem of the social ideal in the context of the intellectual genealogy of the phenomenon of “scientific socialism”. The scientific novelty lies in the specific perspective of the research, which allows the use of a historical-philosophical approach in the analysis of the designated socio-philosophical problems contained in the ideological legacy of the Russian philosopher. As a result of the study, the author comes to the conclusion that the social philosophy of P.L.Lavrov was based on the dogmatic acceptance of socialism as an exclusive version of the social ideal, allowing for the balancing of personal and public interests, and which received theoretical justification on the foundation of the so-called “scientific socialism”, which, according to the philosopher, was the highest point of the historical development of critical thought.

On the Influence of Education and Curricula of Theological Seminaries on the Self-Determination of the Clergy in the Synodal Period

No. 1(32). pp. 136–159. DOI: 10.56621/27825884_2026_32_136

Abstract

The article attempts to analyze the influence of education and the content of educational programs on the inter-class mobility of the clergy during the Synodal period. It identifies four stages of mobility within the clergy and argues that the social mobility of the clergy was divided into closed and open mobility, each consisting of outgoing and incoming mobility. Within the Synodal period, which encompasses two stages of the phenomenon studied in the article, the role of education as a crucial factor in the social stratification of the clergy is explored. It is shown that the first stage was marked by legislative measures in the early 18th century, when Peter I closed the spiritual class at the entrance through the educational environment for pragmatic state interests, the main of which were taxation and conscription. It is substantiated that at the turn of the second and third stages, after the adoption of the 1884 Statute, the access of seminarians to secular service was restricted, which led to the partial closure of the clergy at the exit. The polemics that emerged in the 19th century about the priority of general education or theological training in theological schools, reflecting the contradictions between the class demands of the clergy and the personnel needs of the Russian Orthodox Church, and reflecting the pre-revolutionary drama of the era, are analyzed. The author concludes that the self-determination of the spiritual class in the social conditions of the period under study was closely connected with the educational environment.

No. 1(32). pp. 160–182. DOI: 10.56621/27825884_2026_32_160

Abstract

The article is devoted to an analysis of the scholarly works and pedagogical activity of Hieromonk Sophonia (Sokolsky) during his service at the Tver, Vologda, and Arkhangelsk theological seminaries between 1827 and 1835 — a period that marked the beginning of his path towards service on the archiepiscopal see of Turkestan. Drawing on archival sources, the study reconstructs the sequence and chronology of his appointments in these seminaries, identifies the difficulties he encountered in the course of his labours, and determines the range of obediences he fulfilled in addition to his principal teaching duties. It is demonstrated that the seminary period played a decisive role in shaping his ecclesiastical-administrative views and his monastic character, in which the features of an indefatigable worker, a fighter against injustice, and a true monk were already discernible. The author substantiates the argument that the transfer of Hieromonk Sophonia from the Tver seminary to the Vologda one was indirectly connected with his opposition to the avarice of the inspector of the Tver seminary, while his transfer from Vologda to Arkhangelsk was linked to his denunciation of the rector of the Vologda seminary, who had concealed the immoral conduct of certain members of the teaching staff. The article concludes that the labours of Hieromonk Sophonia were highly valued by the ecclesiastical authorities, which led to his promotion to more senior positions, in particular from the post of inspector of the Arkhangelsk seminary to that of rector of the Orel seminary, accompanied by his elevation to the rank of archimandrite.

No. 1(32). pp. 183–197. DOI: 10.56621/27825884_2026_32_183

Abstract

The Taurida Diocese, encompassing the administrative boundaries of the Taurida Governorate, was considered one of the youngest diocesan entities in the late 19th century. The gradual development of church life in the Taurida Diocese occurred in the context of the strengthening of the church mission in the region, facilitated by the work of Bishop Guriy (Karpov), a graduate of the Saratov Theological Seminary who headed the diocese from 1867 to 1882, as well as the opening of the Taurida Theological Seminary in 1873 as a significant spiritual and educational center in southern Russia. This article presents a characterization of the situation in the Taurida Diocese at the end of the 19th century, based on the analysis of reports on diocesan life held in the collection of the Holy Synod of the Russian State Historical Archive. A distinctive feature of this study is the nature of its source selection: the analysis is based on two reports on the state of the Taurida Diocese—for 1898 and 1899—due to the accession of Bishop Nikolai (Ziorov) to the Taurida See in 1898. The first report was prepared before Bishop Nikolai's arrival in Crimea, and the second one, therefore, represents the bishop's initial conclusions on the state of affairs in the diocese after becoming familiar with church life in Crimea.

Abstract

The article examines the phenomenon of ecclesiastical parliamentarism in late imperial Russia through the example of Bishop Eulogius (Georgievsky) and his participation in the Third State Duma. It explores the theological premises of his involvement in parliamentary activity and explicates the concept of “pastoral testimony” as a specific form of the Church’s presence within secular institutions. Eulogius interpreted legislative work as a continuation of his pastoral mission aimed at affirming moral order in public governance. The analysis of his speeches and political conduct reveals a model of interaction between spiritual and civic service grounded in the principle of conciliar responsibility. The study concludes that ecclesiastical parliamentarism represents a theologically motivated mode of the Church’s participation in the public sphere without compromising its spiritual autonomy.
